Can Mietzner repeat?
Jackson's Ben Mietzner has only beaten his rival, Cascade's Chung, once in the last two years.
But it was a big win.
MIetzner took down Chung 6-4, 6-0 in the district title game last time, and is working hard during his junior year to try to make history repeat itself.
"Well Patrick's gotten the best of Ben most of the time, but Ben beat him last year once," said Jackson head coach David Hutt. "Both guys have been the best players in the league both last year and this year."
Chung has an advantage as a left-handed player, which isn't incredibly familiar for Mietzner. He can also get in a rhythm and is difficult to stop, according to Hutt.
In his big win, Hutt said that Mietzner was able to return Chung's shots. Instead of immediately having to play defensively like most of Chung's opponents, Mietzner is able to get some good shots off against the Bruin.
"Ben's in great shape. He's able to run all the shots down," Hutt said. "He's just very consistent and has a determination to keep the ball in play. And he's very successful at it.
"The only person he's lost to the last two years is Patrick."

Prep tennis: 4A District 1 Tournament

10/30/2013

MOUNT VERNON -- Ben Mietzner of Jackson and Cascade's Patrick Chung are back in familiar territory.
The duo will meet today in the 4A District 1 tournament singles championship at Mount Vernon High School in a rematch of last year's title game, which Mietzner won 6-4, 6-0.
It was his first victory over Chung.
Mietzner, a junior, reached the title game with wins over Kincaid Norris (Snohomish) and Arlington's Trent Sarver, the No. 1 seed out of the Wesco 4A North. Chung swept Mount Vernon senior Roland Farrell in straight sets and then defeated former Cascade teammate Jimmy Hua -- who now plays for Kamiak -- 6-1, 6-1.

Jackson singles player becomes 11th Timberwolves player in 12 years to win district singles championship

MOUNT VERNON -- When it comes to playing friend and rival Patrick Chung, Jackson's Ben Mietzner just can't seem to get over the hump.
Unless it's the district tournament that is.
For the second straight year, the Timberwolves junior beat Cascade's Chung in the 4A Northwest District 1 Tournament singles championship match 6-1, 6-4 to take the district title at Mount Vernon H.S. on Wednesday. It's the only two times Mietzner has defeated Chung in his high school career.
"It's kind of indescribable. I just came out with the belief that I could win," said Mietzner, who lost to Chung in straight sets both times they met this season. "I had the theory to just win one point at a time and grinded out points and eventually won."
Both Chung and Mietzner return to the state tournament, which will be held in Richland on May 30-31. Chung finished eighth at state last year and Mietzner went 1-2 but didn't place.
Arlington's Trent Sarver came from a set down to beat Kamiak's Jimmy Hua 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 and take third place. The Eagles senior plays Kingco's third-place finisher at Skagit Valley College on Saturday at 2 p.m. for the final berth to state.
It could have easily been over for Sarver on Wednesday, but a pep talk from his coach proved to be the difference.
"I told him you can play one more set for your high school career or play two sets and get to Saturday," said Arlington head coach Sean Cunningham. "I said I thought he needed to play big and he did."
After playing to Hua's more rally-heavy game in the first set, Sarver turned to his game in the second set and won the set with big serves and a number of hard shots for winners, according to Cunningham.
"Trent played his game in second and third sets," Cunningham said. "Trent came with power and really overpowered him. He ramped up his game and found that extra gear."
In doubles play, Mount Vernon's Casey Goodwin and Kyle Frederick defeated Snohomish's Andrew Ivelia and Jory Strickland to take the district title. Both teams advance to state. Kamiak's Dominic Lee and Garrett Peterson beat Jackson's Peter Cung and Luke George 6-4, 7-5 in the third-place match and face a Kingco team on Saturday for the right to advance to state.
Wind played a role in Wednesday's matches, especially in the singles championship match. Chung struggled with the wind, while Mietzner kept grinding out points and used the wind to his advantage.
"The wind was a big factor," Mietzner said. "When I was against the wind I just kept blocking it back because I knew he was really hitting fast because he had the wind. I just tried my best to keep the ball in play and hoped he would miss it."
After the match, the two friends shook hands and Chung had a simple message for Mietzner.
"He just came up and said 'You got me again,'" Mietzner said. "I didn't know what to say. I was still in shock a little bit because I didn't expect this."
The win was extra special for Mietzner because of offseason surgery that set him back and put into question whether or not he'd play singles at all this season. A surgery to remove an extra bone in his foot kept Mietzner from playing tennis most of the summer and Jackson coach David Hutt said he wasn't sure the junior would be ready to go by the start of the season.
"He was struggling early in practices and I thought I may have to start him at doubles for half the season," Hutt said. "But after the final practice I asked him if he was ready to go and he said he was. He's had a great season."
By winning his second district title, Mietzner joined a distinguished list of Jackson singles players who have won multiple district championships and made it 11 years out of 12 the singles district champion has been a Timberwolves player. Before Mietzner did it, Mitch Williamson, Micheal Chamerski, Richard Oam and Mike Reading were multiple district champs.
"I just feel honored to be in that group," Mietzner said.

Bob's Corn Maze and Pumpkin Farm

The sun wasn't shining, and it was pretty cold with some fog but we decided it was one of the only days we could make it to the pumpkin patch. The pumpkin patch was crowded and there were lines everywhere! We have gone here every year and we don't remember this many people in the past. It is a great place and ran smoothly, so we can see why people like to come.

There were 3 tractors running back and forth to drop off and pick up people. Their pumpkin patch is across the street from the farm area. We noticed this really cool Cougar tractor and we were crossing our fingers that we would get this tractor versus the other two plain ones. Our line was extremely long, but we were placed perfectly to make this one!

This is Bob, the owner, driving the cougar tractor.

We were pretty excited that we were able to ride the Cougar tractor!

I am so strong!

There were just so many cute photos in the cow train. He was so excited to go by himself this year. In the past it was either Hannah or I that would ride with him. He loved it! When he got off he said his stomach felt a bit sick. Funny because most of the rides at Disneyland didn't make him feel that way.  We walked around and did the kid maze and then he wanted to ride the cow train one more time.

Cow Train 2011
We realized we didn't do the pumpkin patch in 2012. Apparently all the weekends were full. I am glad we found time this year to get it in. Ben and Hannah were pretty booked for the rest of the weekends, but it was still nice to get Ashton out there. He had so much fun!

We did the kid corn maze.  You had to find 5 colors throughout the maze and then pick a finger to put the color on. At the end of the maze you came out to a board and you had to find your combination of colors. Ashton was number 80.  Then there was another sign that would tell you what you had to do to be funny. Ashton had to be a clown.  He choose not to show us some clown moves, but it was fun going through the maze searching for the colors!

Jackson's High School Boy's Tennis Winning Streak!

That is Peter Cung, the number 2 singles player for Jackson.

Jackson head coach David Hutt (right) has led the Timberwolves to a 212-27 record in Wesco play since taking over the program in 1999.
MILL CREEK -- Back in October of 2008, Jackson and Kamiak faced off in a showdown of top Western Conference boys tennis teams. Kamiak prevailed that day, handing the Timberwolves a disappointing 4-3 defeat.
It was a disappointment that has yet to be repeated.
Since that loss to Kamiak five years ago, Jackson has run off 81 consecutive Wesco victories, spanning all or part of six seasons. The winning streak is expected to reach 82 this afternoon when the Timberwolves meet Cascade in their regular-season finale.

"It's been remarkable," said Jackson coach David Hutt, who is in his 15th season. "It's really weird to think that in five years, the kids coming through here have never lost."
Peter Cung, a Jackson senior and three-time state qualifier, was in seventh grade when the streak started with the final two matches of 2008. It had already reached 18 wins in a row when he arrived as a freshman in the fall of 2010.
"(The streak) was something we wanted to continue," Cung said. "And now to have continued it for (another) four years is a pretty good achievement."
"It's a pretty big deal," agreed junior Ben Mietzner, the team's No. 1 singles player and a state qualifier last season. "We all want to keep it going."
The streak is hardly the result of close calls and lucky bounces. Since that loss to Kamiak in 2008, the T-wolves have dominated almost every opponent. Their combined match scores in the ensuing years have been 98-14 in 2009, 102-10 in 2010, 98-14 in 2011, 108-4 a year ago and 95-7 to date this year (one match was shortened by rain with Jackson winning 4-0).
In that stretch, Jackson has escaped with 4-3 victories just three times -- vs. Edmonds-Woodway in 2009 and 2010, and vs. Kamiak in 2011. Otherwise the match scores have been 5-2, 6-1 or, most commonly, 7-0.
Since Hutt became the team's head coach in 1999, the program's Wesco record is an astonishing 212-27. In the spring of 2011, which followed the 2010 fall season, Jackson won the state Class 4A state championship led by Michael Chamerski and Mitch Williamson, who placed first and fifth in singles respectively.
Jackson's tennis success is explained largely by its location in Mill Creek, an affluent community with plenty of outdoor courts and tennis-minded families. The program also benefits from the proximity of two top private tennis clubs -- the Mill Creek Tennis Club and the Columbia Athletic Club in south Everett.
As a result, Hutt said, "we've had a lot of good tennis players come through in the last 10 years. And a lot of them have set the bar (at a high level)."
At some point, of course, the streak is bound to end. When that happens, and whether it is this afternoon, next season or somewhere down the road, "we won't really know what to do," Mietzner said. "I don't think it will come to us right away because we really haven't experienced the losing feeling."
For Hutt, the streak "just means that we've had a lot of quality players, and they've started a tradition and an expectation of high quality tennis and competition. So I guess I just try to take myself out of the picture because it's really about the kids.
"I think they have a lot of pride (in the streak)," he said. "They understand that they've achieved something that might not happen again in our Wesco league for another 15 or 20 years. Or it may never happen again at all."

Jackson boys tennis beat Cascade to finish season unbeaten

EVERETT -- The Jackson boys tennis team defeated Cascade 5-2 to finish another season undefeated.
The victory for the Timberwolves marks the 82nd consecutive win for head coach David Hutt and his squad and it's the fifth straight season they've finished unbeaten.
"It's an odd sensation," Hutt said on his team's season. "I tell the kids we need to lose more so that we can feel what it's like to have some adversity."
The top two players in the Wesco 4A South, The Bruins' Patrick Chung and Jackson's Ben Mietzner, met in the No. 1 singles match with Chung winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
"Patrick and Ben were the top players last year too," said Hutt. "Chung will probably be the number one seed (in districts) and Ben will probably be the two seed."
Coach Hutt also saw this as a hopeful district championship preview. "It would be disappointing and sad to see either of those guys get upset in districts," Hutt said.
Peter Cung defeated Chris Kapetenov in the No. 2 singles matchup in straight sets without dropping a game for the Timberwolves, while in doubles play Josh Yi and J.T. Williamson defeated Simon Josephson and Joe Hall 6-3, 6-4.
Up next for Jackson is the 4A South district tournament, which the Timberwolves host beginning Tuesday.

Happy 1st Birthday Autumn!

Autumn turned 1

It was a disappointment that Jaclynn couldn't go to Germany with her husband last month, but we were happy that we were able to spend time with Jaclynn and Autumn and celebrate her 1st birthday with her. She is such a wonderful little girl. Ashton and I have watched her a couple times a week since Jaclynn's baby is due any day now, and we just love having her. Ashton asks every day if we can have Autumn over again. He calls her the best baby ever!  We have not heard her cry yet EVER!  No joke! Of course we do not have her 24 hours in a day, but since she was a little baby and all the babysitting we have done with her, we have yet to hear a cry come from her cute little mouth. I hope she stays good for her mom and dad in the years to come and helps out with her little brother.

We love you Autumn!
